Uttar Pradesh, one of the most populated states in India is touched by the Nepal border. It is a land blessed with a variety of cultural diversity and many historical heroes such as Rama, Krishna, and Mahatma Gandhi who made it their center of activity. The state has a variety of sanctuaries to also protect their diversity in animals and birds. Animals of the region include tigers, leopards, elephants, wild boars, and crocodiles, as well as pigeons, doves, wild ducks, partridges, peafowls, blue jays, quails, and woodpeckers. Several species such as lions from the Gangetic Plain have also become extinct. Two major rivers of India, Ganga and Yamuna flow through Uttar Pradesh.
The People of Uttar Pradesh elect their representatives by voting every five years but in a populated country as India a lot of malpractices occur during voting. Hence to avoid such mal practices the Election Commission of India has come up with the concept of “Voter ID Card”
Elections In India
India is a democratic country and one of the chief features of democracy is that it is a government by the people and for the people. Over time elections have become an essential element in Indian politics, people elect the representative of their choice every 5 years. Citizens of India who have attained 18 years of age and have a valid voter ID card along with their names listed in the electoral roll are eligible to vote. Elections are held for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
Election Commission of India (ECI) and Voter ID Card
Election Commission of India (ECI) was formed in 1950 in a bid to ensure free and fair elections in the country. The President of India appoints a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners to form a three-member team in the Election Commission of India. The main objective of creating an ECI was to avoid malpractices such as bogus voting and rigging.
The ECI creates a plan and procedure to conduct free and fair elections. It came up with the concept of “voter id card” which is a plastic card along with the voter’s photo, date of birth, name and proof. It also acts an identity proof under various circumstances such as booking tickets and voting.
The Chief Election Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh– Mr Sinha has worked a lot towards its development and making a complex procedure of election a simpler task for the literate and illiterate as well. Transparency in election process has been achieved in Uttar Pradesh, data is now electronically managed. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) also supervises the election work related to Assembly and Parliament elections of the State.
We have various Election Commissioners such as Regional Election Commissioner for a particular area, state election commissioners, booth level officers, and others who are responsible for various tasks done during an election.
From updating voters list, distributing, voter ID cards, keeping political parties at bay from interfering into the democratic process, and much more, the responsibility and function of ECI is immense today. Although the powers of ECI is immense as it is independent of political parties and not bound by the authority of the government, yet if proven guilty for failure and misconduct, the ECI can be removed by the parliament.
