Steps Needed For Electoral Registration In A New Constituency

Consider a situation where a woman gets married and moves in with her family to a new town. Although she has a valid voter ID card, her name will not be included in the voter list of the assembly constituency where she has just moved in. To include her name in the electoral roll, she must apply for the same.

As per our Constitution, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is responsible for issuing voter ID card and processing of voter list for each constituency. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), who heads the ECI, delegates the work to various officers under him. For instance, the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) verify and distribute the electoral card. Changes are also done on the electoral roll, after verification.

Let’s find out how you can go for electoral registration in a new constituency and get an updated voter list that has your name and election card that has updated data printed on it.

The electors’ photo identity card (EPIC) is a must today to exercise one’s franchise. It is also essential to have colored passport size photograph of the voter incase the voter is applying for a fresh one. Voter ID card is a must if one needs to cast vote no doubt, but it also has other benefits – Can You Use Voter Card as Valid Identity Card?

It is possible to also register one’s name for voter ID card or include oneself into the voter list through the web. The voter can do the job himself by filling the required form. You can also visit the nearest Election Registration Officer (ERO’s) office to get the job done.

The ECI also conducts a campaign to ensure that new voters or voters, who have changed their residence or name, get their names included in the voter list and consequently, get a valid updated election card. Each state has its own Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) who delegates BLOs to take up door-to-door campaign. Kiosks are also set up at various public places to allow voters to update the voter list.

Electoral Registration through the Web

The BLO enabled campaign generally takes place after every decade. Why forgo your rights as a voter till the team arrives? You can now register for your voter ID card or include your name in the electoral roll online.

In other words, the woman who has just changed residence to a new constituency, can go for electoral registration by logging in to the CEO website of the state where she now lives, fill in form 6, submit the same along with relevant credentials.

How to Know if Name has been Registered?

Many voters may find that their names still not in the voter list when they go for casting their vote. Either there was some error in the system in registering the data or there was a delay in the registration.

It is possible for you to check the status of your electoral registration. Once you follow the steps you will know whether:

  • Your name has been included in the voter list
  • New voter ID card has been issued.
  • Verification of the form and the credentials are in process.
  • Distribution of the electoral card is in process.
  • Your form is incomplete or wrong.
